262/308 starter motors

Could someone tell me what model starter motors are used on the 262/308 engine, ring gear diameter on the flywheel and tooth count on the starter pinion/ring gear. I am reading about 6volt starters and premature bendix wear. I am curious what it would take to mount up a starter with a pre-engaged pinion to our beloved Hudson engines. Is there an aftermarket 6volt or 12volt starter with pre-engaged bendix made for these cars?

    FYI
Snap Rebuilders in Salt Lake built a 12VMini Starter using all ne HD Parts to fit Hudson with automatic tramsmissions to eliminate breaking Nose Cones on the old cast iron starters when use 12Volts.
801 467 2902 buy Factory Direct. Incidently Hudson Ring Gear pitch is identical to old mopars Mtr's.( Ive adapted a 318 Mopar Mini Stater twice with no problems).
  • What does the starter fasten to? Does it only fasten to the flex plate on the back of the engine? Or is it fastened to the bell housing on the transmission? I have not seen many Hudsons in person, but I do recall the starter not having a traditional nose to fit into a flywheel housing,

Bolts to Bell Hsing. Modern starters have no need for nose cone. Suggest calling for details. Their nice to talk with.....

KTRON, this is a post about fitting a geared starter to a 35 Hudson 8, the set up for a stepdown 6 would be similar. The basic starter would be identical. I suspect the adapter plate would also be identical but I'm not 100% sure, that would need a little investigation.

Thanks for the link and info about the 12v compact mini starters. I do not have a Hudson yet, but am slowly trying to figure out whats out there and what can be done with these cars. I was more or less interested in what it would take to adapt an unconventional starter to these cars, whether that might be a 12volt compact starter or a far out Ingersoll Rand air starter. Looks like the ring gear might pose a problem, but a new one can be made with ease, and welded to the flywheel. The next question begs to question whether or not the rods and rotating assembly can take an instant shock load high rpm start or not. Ive replace the slow 8Kilowatt Delco starter motors on some of my large engines with 34-40hp IR air starters. The cranking speed difference, and sound is unreal. 175rpm vs 850rpm cranking speed makes a huge difference for cold starting. There isnt much room in a Hudson for 40-60 gallons of air tanks, but its always fun to dream...

  • Chris,

    Please do this.
