starting problem

Thanks to all who helped with my past starting problem coupled with lack of power to all my gauges. Turned out to be a main power wire that had frayed and had shorted out the system. Wire was replaced, and now when I connect the battery,I can hear the circuit breaker clicking on and off. Any ideas on what is causing this? If the circuit breaker is bad, are they available? The car had been converted by previous owner to 12 volts, but I have had no problems in the past..
Thanks..

John, Sounds like something is still grounding out the system.

I assume this is the main breaker, not the one on the headlight switch....right?

Well, the breaker COULD be bad (I believe these are universal breakers and still available) BUT... it could be breaking the circuit for a good reason!  (i.e., there is a short somewhere!).

Can you isolate the problem by disconnecting each of the wires that comes out of the breaker (downstream from the breaker that is) and then connecting the battery to see if the breaker still clicks?  Chances are that by removing one of them, it will stop the problem, and you'll then know that the problem occurs somewhere along THAT circuit.  You can check your wiring diagram to see what components that particular wire serves, and then disconnect each of THOSE items from that particular circuit (after you reconnect their main feed wire back to the breaker).  In this way, as you chase the problem further and further downstream, you can check at each stage to see whether the problem is further downstream OR you have finally found it.

Could be in a wire (bad insulation) or a bad switch, but proceeding carefully in this manner you should be able to find it.

On the other hand, if you disconnect all the wires coming out of the breaker and it STILL clicks when the battery's re-attached, the breaker would probably be bad.

Ken is right. As I said in an earlier post, get a new harness. Don't screw around with scotch locks and splicings. Either make or buy a new harness.   You will be forever chasing down new gremlins on this mess.
