Hard hot starting

I have a 39 eight in my 47 pickup. Starts great when cold but will hardly turn over when hot. Acts like timing is early. There is a vacuum advance on the distributor. Can't remember is this was original. Could the advance be sticking or is the starter going? Any ideas?

Thanks Ken, sounds reasonable and I'll check them out and post what I find.0
