 I have a question a little off the subject can you use a generate with A/C or do you have to use a  alternator

Charles, I don't see why not, it's more about voltage I think and if the generator can produce enough to keep the extra load to the battery charged. The first AC units were generator driven. Finding a good 6v ac unit may be an issue.
The advantage of the alternator is that it charges at very low rpm where as the generator needs to be turning 1200 + if I remember right.
 Ken, I don't have a belt on yet and it adjusted, but I'll check, I don't think it is going to be an issue.

When using a single belt for everything, the wrap {degrees} on sheaves of alt. and A/C is smaller than basically recommended by almost any authority. Result is that belt tension must be extremely high to prevent slip.
Best to use 2 belts with a 2 belt crank pulley; can be set up with either a 2 belt water pump pulley also or w/o a 2 belt water pump pulley to have at least a 90 degree wrap.

Note this is BEST and not necessarily practical sometimes, nor are required parts always available when you need them. Just 2 weeks ago I looked at an identical A/C installation under the alt. that ran from a 2 belt crank sheave and everything was perfect; don't remember if the alt. or A/C just ran off the crank only. Naturally, a forward offset is required by one or the other.

I am running A/C with 2 belts but my A/C is mounted on the right side ( I also have a power steering pump mounted above the alternator).

You can get by with a little less with the wider, 3/4" belt than standard practices have dictated over the years.  Typically, about 1/3 pulley coverage is accepted practice with the smaller belts and around 20-25% with the wider belts, is what I have come to find.
