gauge voltage regulator

I'm re-wiring a 51 Pacemaker and a 52 Wasp and have a question, when ground is hooked up and 6V is applied to IGN end of regulator,
what should the voltage reading going out to the gauges be? I'm getting 6.38V in and 6.38 V out. Other times the "out" is all over the place.

Also it appears that the 51 had three wires hooked up to the IGN side and in 52 only one wire. Also in 52 the ignition switch was changed.

    thanks Ken!
I called Williamson's instruments to ask why they had taken the regulator off he 52 gauges they restored for me and he said that they now take that regulator off all 6v gauges as its not really needed. They were supposed to do a 12v conversion on te guages as well, they use a solid state diode to reduce down to 6v, and I could not find the diode and discussed it with them, seems they forgot it so I'm sending it back along with a new gas tank sending unit from Paul, so they can bench check everything.

Dennis Carpenter Ford parts has an electronic regulator that takes 12v in and puts out a regulated 5v, which gives you the same effect as the original Hudson regulator.  Costs about $35 I think.

I trot this photo out now and then. Its a simple electronic 12V to 5V regulator I made that fits in place of the original.

    Bob,
I'll bet you've got a circuit diagram around somewhere. Could you share that with us? I won't understand it but I have a brother who will!

This shows a 6V regulator, the part number for a 5V regulator is 8705, capacitors remain the same, and its a -ve earth set up.

Our forum software can be exasperating!

The diagram shows a 6V output, for a 5V output use a 7805 regulator, capacitor values stay the same. Also this diagram is for a -ve earth vehicle.
