The Simpsons

So I'm watching The Simpsons the other night and it had a Hudson in it! Grandpa was telling about the time he bailed out of an
airplane he stole to impress a girl. it was an F-104
interestingly enough. He landed on the road and was picked up by Jack Kerouac.
Yes, the car in “On the Road” was a Hudson. I was just rolling.

I'd be curious to hear opinions about "On the Road". I read it recently and fought my way through it. I'd have given up but I was in a situation where I had absolutely nothing else to do for 4 days and I'd always wanted to read it, given the hype about the reference to Hudson in it.
    Book reports anyone?

Fighting your way through it is about right, I gave it a good try a few years ago, put it to to one side and haven't got back to it yet.

I know its a classic and all that, but it was not all that readable. Maybe if it was my only reading material and there was nothing else to do for a few days I'd give it another try.

I'm a great one to criticize the writings of others, but I found it very difficult to follow. Names of characters just thrown at the reader without any explanation of how they fit into the story, as if I was supposed to already know who they are.
By the end I realized that I'd just forced my way through a story about drug/alcohol addiction......not really what I had expected but it did serve to squash any desire to read more of Jack's works.
    Oh, well.
