Heater box removal? 1947 pickup
I need to get the heater core out of my pickup. I thought I would take the whole box out but I can,t. I removed all the brackets and bolts, but it looks like it my be spot welded to the air intake opening. Is this true? Has anyone taken the whole box out before? My heater core will not clear the tubes if I don,t. Maybe I am going at this the wrong way? Any thoughts?

If you are going to remove the heater core do the following: disconnect all hoses from the heater core nipples on the engine side of the firewall. Next, remove the blower box assembly and associated wires and cables. Finally, remove any remaining screws attaching the heater core to the plenum. The core should be able to drop out if the hoses are disconnected. You may run into a lot of leaves ,etc dropping down upon removing the core but that is pretty normal. There are no spot welds holding the heater core to the plenum. Well... no spot welds from the factory anyway.0

I have everything disconnected but the heater core will not come down far enough to clear the tubes through the hole. Maybe the box edge is bent in and will not clear. My thought was to remove the entire box with the core from the truck. This would also allow me to clean and paint it. But with every bolt and bracket out it doesn't move. Looks like it may be spot welded around the opening out side in front of the windshield?0

Step downs are welded and I'll bet yours is too.0

On the 46-7 heater cores you may have to unscrew the nipples into the engine bay area. Unlike the stepdown 46-7 's unscrew. May be tough if they have been on the unit for a long time.0
