Step Down Starter Solenoid ???

Is the starter solenoid (6v) polarity sensitive? Is it automatically grounded via the mounting screws to the inner fender sheet metal or do I have to run a ground wire from ??? to a good ground? My engine won't turn over with the ignition key but turns over with the manual button on the solenoid.

regards

Ken, no it is not 12v. When I originally got the car they were going to convert it to 12v but I am restoring it to the original 6v. I just finished wiring the starting circuit & tried to turn it over with the key nothing happened. I could turn it over with the "manual" button on the solenoid hence I thought may I still had the 12v solenoid in there so I got a new 6v solenoid, installed it but had the same results. I did try a jumper from -term. of battery to the "st" (small) terminal of the solenoid again no results. That is why I thought just maybe the solenoid was polarity sensitive & I should have bought a " neg. 6v" solenoid. Possible I got a bad 6v solenoid out of the box???

  • Ken, yes the battery is properly grounded with two braided ground straps routed as you state. Yes there is paint on the sheet metal where the solenoid is mounted and undercoating on the opposite side. That might be the problem. I'll go out tomorrow and scrape away some paint & undercoating or would it be a cleaner installation if I ran a ground wire from one of the mounting screws to a good ground point?

  • O.K., all, I've tried all suggestions and still no positive results. I'm loading up the RV & going camping/fishing. I'll be back in 2 weeks ready to tackle this puzzling problem.

    regards to all

  • Ken, I do have the positive terminal strapped as ground as per Doug Wildriks instructions.
