RV (trailer) towing

Anyone had any experience towing a trailer with a step down Hudson. I would think a 308 with 4.10 gears and OD should be a pretty good set up for towing, I am thinking of a 16' unit around 2000 - 2500 lb range. How cool it would be to have a restored older air stream to pull along.

I tow our  14 foot caravan with my Jet, which has 4.1 rear end and overdrive.  i can manage  overdrive usually on flat, but a 'good head wind' needs direct drive   A Step down should have about the same power to weight ratio, so would have no trouble handling that.

An old air stream behind a step down would be a very cool thing to see.

We had a similar conversation a while back and I said I'd love to be able to tow something like an Airstream behind my 1939 112.

As some said I'd probably get better performance towing the 112 with the Airstream :)

I'm still hoping one day to have something that can tow something else!

I'd be more concerned about getting it stopped than getting it going. An effective trailer braking system is a must IMO.

The trailer looks like a 22' Silver Streak (Clipper Model )around 1949-1952.
I am working on one to pull behind the 48 someday if I ever get it done.
Will need to figure out a good hitch for the stepdown.

Might want to consider electric brakes on the trailer, too, 48Sed.

The trailer has 12v brakes now but the car is 6V?

Park will know how to solve it.  Maybe a remote battery, charged by an alternator hooked up to the driveshaft . . .

A friend is using 2 6 volt optima batteries in parallel so his 6 volt system remains and he has the ability to use 12 volts for ad on 12 volt accessories. Just a thought ...

To run my trailer lights I have a 12V battery in a plastic sealed box in the boot (trunk) with four relays to run the trailer lights off the 12V supply. Works brilliantly so no reason why that would not work for electric brakes depending on the current they draw. I only need to charge the battery over night every month or so.
