They should lift off. I cannot see how the absence of a centering stud could make them hard to remove.

I think he's referring to the drums and not the wheels.If indeed you are, the centering pin has nothing to do with removing the drums (or the wheels), and yes, you very well might have to use a drum removal tool (the dogbone variety still works wonders). Of course, it helps if you back off the shoes first . . . even then, you still might have to use a tool for removal.0

That peg is little more than a special shape hot rivet. There are 5 rivets fastening the hub to the drum, 4 standard ones and the special peg rivet.I replaced a couple of those sawn off ones a while ago. Once you (carefully) get the sawn rivet out, the hole the rivet comes out of is coincidentally the exact size for, from memory a 3/8" x 24 tap.Tapped the hole, made replacement pegs with threaded ends, screwed them in and peened the thread end. Job done.0

I'd be very surprised if a brake drum puller were required for the front drums. The rear drums....yes, they need a puller!

Other than fastening/holding the assembly together, the peg is there only to assist in mounting the rim/tire. It is a 'location pin' which makes mounting the wheel on the car easier - that's all.
Typically, it is 'sawed off' because someone puts aftermarket/non-Hudson rims on the car, and the peg gets in the way...

drivergo2, if you have never had the front brake drums off your car, for your safety, it is time. Unbolt the wheel and tire (like changing a flat). Remove the bearing grease dust cover on the center of the hub. Pull the cotter pin out stopping the nut from turning. Remove the nut. Slide the the hub and drum assembly straight out off the steering spindle. Look at the amount of brake lining you have left. Adequate? Peel back the rubber boots on each side of the wheel cylinder. Dry inside? Was it time to do a brake job (inadequate lining or wet outer cylinders)?
Note no drum puller is EVER needed on the front drums (rear yes).
Note the sawed off pin was originally there only for your convenience when bolting on the wheel to align the bolt holes.
