The 232/262 blocks are the same, same casting numbers. difference is internal, crank and piston pin height. The 308 block has a reinforcing "ridge" just above the oil pan flange (about one inch above).Easiest to I.D by using the casting numbers.1951-1953 308's # is 304539.1954 is # 3101111955-56 is # 532500.Sorry, have not yet learned to post picturesFred "Ric"0

Also, you can not depend on the vin # stamped on the block. I have a 55 engine in my 52 Hornet with a 52 vin # stamped on the block. It must have been a Hudson crate replacement engine.
How do you know you might ask. Recently I ordered the wrong rear main seal after using the engine vin # that indicated it was a 52 engine to fix oil leak. Pulled pan and rear main seal. When I checked the casting # it turned out to be a 55 block. Ordered a 55 rear main seal and no more oil leaks. The early engines and the 55-56 engine rear main seals are not even close to being the same. Neither are interchangeable.
