Oil Pump Cover Seal

I have the 308 oil pump out because I needed to remove the broken 14/20 cover bolt threads that broke removing when replacing leaking cover seal. The old oil seal appears to be a square rubber or other material type seal. I have acquired two cork seals made for the 308. One is .085" thick the other .125" thick. The seal groove is .065" deep. That means the first gasket must compress .020" and the second gasket must compress .060"

I have a concern about trying to compress a cork gasket .060". Or is there a source for square rubber type gasket.

The rubber gasket measured .067" after being compressed for unknown years.

This is my first Hudson oil pump cover gasket replacement and can use someone's experience advice on which gasket to use.

Thanks for any advice.

    Mint to type 1/4-20 bolt.

And you meant to type "meant".

I have also been leery of using the cork gaskets supplied by some mfgrs. since they don't seem to know for sure what to use. I use a pair of concentric O-rings 74Mmm X 78mm and 78mm X 82. They are 2mm in cross section (about .080) so they fill the groove well, provide good compression while leaving sufficient volume in the groove for displacement of the rubber. I include them in all of the Vintage Full Flow kits with instructions on how to keep them in the grove while assembling the cover onto the pump. Like this:

Clean the groove with a parts cleaner (Brak-kleen or such), spray the mating face of the pump with a light coat of gasket cement, wipe off the excess, leaving the floor of the groove coated. Spray one side of the O-rings with the cement, let it "tack-up" then work the rings into the groove. Now they'll stay put while you do the rest.

Where can I get these O-rings?

I can't say specifically where you'd get them but any hydraulic repair/supply outfit should either have them or can get them for you if you give them the ID X OD X cross section dimensions. I'm lucky enough to already have a biz relationship with my local hydraulics guy for back in my excavating biz days. He still locks the doors when he sees me coming but I know where he hides the key. Don't waste your time at an auto parts store.....they have no idea what you're talking about.

After all of this, I don't think there would be any problem with using the .085 thick part. Compressing it .020 shouldn't be an issue especially if there's a little room left in the groove for lateral expansion as it compresses.

The pump groove is .165" wide and the cork gasket is .150" thick so should have enough expansion space.

Frank, I sent you a PM.

I bought within the last few years 2 of these square rings and 2 distributor seals from  Rudy Bennett. Not sure
if he still has any. Hudsonly  Ray

Lee, I believe Norm Blackmer CICHET club store can help you. I get all my o-rings from o rings and things in Fontana CA but thats a drive for you.
