Hi from New Zealand
I always use Penrite products for most applications - they are avaliable in UK according to Google.
HPR30 (20W60) in the engine, Transoil 140 for gearbox and diff, Steering box lube in the steering box (also us it for the kingpins) and an ATF (no Penrite product) for the clutch.
Good luck

Use Dexron lll (3) You just need a 500ml bottle on the shelf and I use a 60ml syringe to dispence.Turn the flywheel so filler bung is at the bottom, remove and add ATF till it starts to dribble out, replace the bung and away you go. Just half to one syringe fill is usually more than enough for a top-up.I usually check at approx 500mile intervals and of course at full 1000mile or so servicing.
Good luck

I know this is an old thread, but I thought it would be good to have my question answered on the same thread. The 28 Essex Instruction manual says to use motor oil for the generator, distributor base, and horn. Do you recommend the same motor oil as the engine? Also, any suggestions on which "fiber grease" to use for the universal joints and other items in the lubrication chart?0

Blaine,I've always used the same oil as I put in the motor for lubricating the generator, starter, and distributor on my '35 Hudson 8, '41 Hudson 6, and various step-downs.Per0

So I finally got around to changing the fluids on my 28 Essex. I can't find anything that will fit in the square fill plug on the clutch. It is just slightly smaller than my socket wrench. Any suggestions? Also, when I was tightening the drain plug on the transmission the head snapped off. It appears to have threads courser than standard American course threads. It's 1/2" and the standard thread count is 13 per inch. It appears to be in the 12, 11, or 10 range. Any suggestions where to get a replacement? I tried every store in my area. It looks similar to this one Model A oil drain plug... http://www.snydersantiqueauto.com/1928-oil-drain-plug0

I did find some drain plug sockets online that might do the trick for the clutch. I ordered a set. But I am unable to find any replacement for the trans drain plug.0

I just made one up from a square piece of steel, bent and filed the end down to fit. Other have just files down an old socket wrench for this purpose.
