Ray--Glad to hear you and Helen will be going on the Hearst Castle tour!  Just send Jeanene the money for the tickets with your Meet registration or separately if you had already registered.

Tractor--Thanks for the offer to tour the wood shop!  That sounds very interesting and I've sent the info on to Jeanene and Ed.  Where is the shop?  How long of a drive would it be?  Friday is the hot dog lunch at noon and wine and cheese at 3:00. Saturday is the Hearst Castle tour.  Some of us will be down there Thursday I think, but not sure how many.  Let me know how much time we should plan and if there's a time that would be best.

  • It is off 46 west at 101. Its about 45 minutes by modern car east

Some time ago I told my wife I was going to see my Aunt and Cousins 200 miles away in Atascadero near Paso Robles, (I did) but the real reason was to look over Tractors Hudson PU and parts he bought. When we finished looking at all the parts he invited me to see his shop. It was amazing to see the wood carvings and film props they create. If I remember correctly the shop is over the mountain about 30 miles from San Simeon located on outskirts of Paso Robles Cruising up highway 46 over the mountain on the west side there are places to pull off the road and on a clear day you can see the ocean surrounding Morro Rock protruding high above the water in Morro Bay. Coasting down the east side there are several wineries along the way. Hwy. 46 is a nice scenic drive. At the shop, seeing what they create and how it is made was amazing. You may have seen some of their creations on the big screen or TV.

Thank you Tractor for the offer.

We will be driving our ( brand X) F350 with Bigfoot camper, as we will be beach camping along the coast after the meet. And will bring Hudson parts to sell! We will be staying at the host hotel during the meet, and not in our camper. Hopefully, we can hitch a ride to the Hearst Castle tour with someone, as it might be difficult  to park it at the castle.

We can bring micro-brews to share if that is ok.

Hey, Tractor--I see where you are!  I'm emailing the Committee to relay your offer and get some feedback. Would Thursday afternoon be a possibility?  Thanks for your positive endorsement of the shop and the area, Lee!

Ray--I'm sure there will be no problem being able to get a ride up to the Castle parking area.  We get our tickets there at the Visitors' Center, then they take you up the hill in buses, so no problem.  Bring your microbrews!  I will bring a cheap wine cooler I'm happy to share and if we have to sneak pour them on the side of the formal wine & cheese, that's what we'll do!  ;))

Okay!  So maybe 3:00 would be a good time?  Is that at the facility on Limestone Way in Paso?  Those of us that arrive on Wed. could carpool over from the coast and those driving over on Thursday would have plenty of time to meet us there whether coming from the north, south, or east.  I'll confer with my compadres and make sure there are no conficts.  How long should we plan to be there--an hour or hour and a half?  Then we could all head west on 46 from there.  Like I said, there's an Arco gas station there too and it's good to fill up for a little less than what gas will be on the coast.   /:)

  • Yes on Limestone way. That is probably a good idea on time with heading next door to the brewary

Okay--thanks!  I'll talk to the Meet committee this weekend and get back to you next week.  This would be for Thursday afternoon, Sept. 17, at 3:00.  Thanks again for your offer!  It sounds really interesting and we'll look forward to seeing your Hudson(s) too!

  • Just one a 46 Hudson big boy pickup. It is heavily modified. I am not sure what I will be doing with the truck. I half way am thinking of selling it and finding a stock truck.

Hey, Tractor--looks like we're on for Thursday, Sept. 17, at 3:00!  We're getting ready to go to Colorado Springs so I can't do it right now, but when I get back I'll put a flyer together and send it out to the email addresses that we have registered so people can stop by on their way over to the coast.  I haven't done it in this forum yet, but I'll try PMing you so we can nail down some additional details.

Mark gave me a tour of Daniels Wood Land a while back. Unfortunately we can not get there on time for Thursday's tour. Wish we could, I would like to see what's new going on. Bettie has not been there and I think she would enjoy seeing all the interesting things they carve from wood and how things are made. Actually, there was so much to see it is easy to overlook something. Don't forget to look up high.
    Enjoy the tour.
Thank you Mark and everyone else involved making the tour possible.

Sorry I'm so late posting a follow-up to our All-Cal Meet this year!  The weather was beautiful and I think a good time was had by all!

Thanks SO much to Mark Van Klaveren and John Daniels for the FANTASTIC tour at Daniels Wood Land Inc. on Thursday afternoon!  We really got an excellent inside look into the variety of projects and creative processes and methods used to develop the wonderful things they do over there for kids play structures, shooting galleries, theme attractions, movies--whatever you can imagine, they can make it happen!  We also got a good education on the kind and sources of the wood they use on some projects and saw a variety of different pieces.  Catch them on the next season of 'Redwood Kings' on the Animal Planet channel.   =D>

We had a good number of registrations and cars on Thursday and Friday, which made for successful hot dog lunch and wine, cheese, and olive tasting events on Friday.  We had raffle numbers drawn all day Friday and celebrated birthdays for Kay and Perry Spring along with a special anniversary (Walt and Margaret Mordenti's 70th!).  =D>   There was lots of parts and swap activity in the parking lot as well as an active bonfire group every evening.

Saturday was another special day.  Joanne Kerbavaz had arranged for a special 'behind-the-scenes' tour of Hearst Castle.  We got the tour that normally costs $200 or more for the regular cost of $25.  She had arranged for the normal buses to take us to the top of the hill and one or two tour guides depending on our number of sign-ups.  When we got to the Visitor's Center, a glitch had not assigned a bus for our group, but there were three tour guides available.  That meant that we could facilitate smaller groups and vary our time and physical requirements according to peoples' schedules and abilities.  That also meant that we could arrange to drive the Hudsons that we took up the hill to the Castle.  This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and allowed us to take pictures of some of our cars with the Castle in the background.  And even though many of us had toured the Castle peviously, we all saw places and things we had never seen before.  It was VERY informative and interesting!  Thanks so much, Joanne, to you and the excellent guides we had!  =D>

Our dinner Saturday night at the San Simeon Lodge dining room was very good.  We had two lucky winners of the 50/50 raffle and of the grand raffle prize of a portable power unit.  I think a good time was had by all and everyone made it home okay.  Thanks to everyone who came and we look forward to seeing you all next year if not before!
