Coil upside down??

Grew up at my father's station in the '50s-'70s...was always told to never mount coils upside down.
Why do I see so many '48-51 Hudson sixes (my own included) with the coils pointing down. Seems like it must've come from the factory that way since I see so many untouched or totally restored examples that way.

    In fact, they came from the factory that way.

    Model A Fords are connection side down too.

    Stepdowns and Jets have the coil mounted at 45 deg. with terminals pointing down.   Most other models have the terminals up.

    I bought my '35 Hudson with a Mallory coil that pointed up.   
    Several years ago when it became weak I replaced it with a new coil that says "12 volts. Use with resistor only" (I also mounted it pointing up).  That means it is designed to work with about 6 volts, with the other 6 volts being across a resistor when used with 12 volts.  My car is 6 volts so  I don't use a resistor.  It works well.
