I'd like to find one also thats in really great shape for '51-'56. Seen them on ebay already in the $300-400 range, but alot of time they have damage, plugs broken off or helicoil inserts. Also some may be for narrow blocks or the seller is not sure.0

I'll take the damage. I haven't seen one on e-bay in a very long time. Last Edmunds head I saw on e-bay was a New In Box head for a narrow block super six.
I'm still looking.

I've got two left. We had 3. I'll have to check the condition of them and see if Dad wants to sell them. We sold the last one on Ebay but I don't remember what it went for.0

Pardon my ignorance, but I thought helicoil inserts were a good thing. Is there some disadvantage of which I'm unaware?0

Harcoequip, I'd also be interested in an Edmunds head if for a wide block 51-56. If you end up putting on ebay, let us know. Thanks0

Helicoils are generally a sign of damage and repair (or attempted repair) There's also several different type on the market. Spring or coil type and the threaded inserts. I would think a preference for a more permanent repair would be the threaded insert. The disadvantage generally would be a larger hole to drill and tap to install over the coil type. Certainly, I would prefer to have parts with neither installed.0

I had steel threaded inserts put into the aluminum head on my C8 since the steel is superior to aluminum for galling and in the odd chance that there is a cross thread situation (should be rarer in a flathead, but I did do it to my Subaru several years ago and that sucked big time!)0

Outside of using an Aluminum head for something such as a custom application of an Edmunds, or Clifford, I would probably prefer to use a cast iron Hudson head over aluminum every time.
just my opinion...0
