Have you considered checking where boats are maintained/restored. Boats spend a lot of time in the elements. They should have good information you need.
I have heard black stain was the original color for 46 - 47 PU beds.

Keep in mind that no clear sealer in the world will last in the elements, including sunshine.  And I don't care if it says UV-Protected, or any other claim that it does well for exterior use.  There is no such thing.  It will look good as long as you store it inside and limit the amount of exterior exposure.  Best not to use a "Poly" coating, like polyurethane or any other plastic coating, as it lasts even less time than some others.

As Lee pointed out, black was the original color if originality is important.

Some info I turned up in my search for bedwood for my '65 Chevy.

Thank you for the black color confirmation. I really like the "bling" look of beautiful shiny bed wood, polished stainless trim, but I am considering black as the better realistic choice for a driver/hauler on my 47 PU. I won't have to fret about scratching beautiful polished bed wood and periodic redo's. Only about denting the straight bed sides and tailgate. Well there is a small ding on end of tail gate tube. I had bought new wood/polished stainless strips for previous truck I sold and never got around to installing them. My new truck already has good wood so it will get the black stain treatment.
