Starter problem ?

I had my starter rebuilt and converted to 12 volt for my 12 volt system. Now when I start the car I hear a loud click and when driving I hear an intermittent click, and when I rev engine I hear a loud type of howl. Never heard this before when starter was 6 volt. Any ideas on what is going on? Also is there a solution?
Thanks,
John

Could be that the starter drive gear is not disengaging once the engine has started?

That's the only thing that comes to mind.  Bad bendix, perhaps.

Did you mount the starter with the studs that are designed to keep the starter centered? If not and the starter is the least bit out of center the bendix will catch and not fully retract. It is spinning on the flywheel.
  • That would be about 24,000 pinion rpm at 2000 engine rpm. seems like something horrible would happen before it got that high!

Thanks for the replies. I suspected it was a bendix problem. I did use the same bolts to mount the starter that were used before. Doug Wildrick did mention in his tech talk in Colorado on conversion from 6 to 12 volt that the new bendix is less than desirable at times. If I get no solution to my problem, I might be able to find a good used bendix for a hyramatic starter. I HOPE!
  • Ken, With all due respect that is not the Bendix you want to use. Please don't use a Ford Bendix. The teeth are longer on this Bendix and do not dis-engage upon starting. It's a mess. Plus once it's on     good luck getting it off. Too big to work off easily. It's a nightmare. There is a current Bendix available for hydramatics    from NAPA it's part number BK 656 1085..They are rebuilt but they will work .

Lance is spot on and yes the starter will spin with the flywheel until it dies. Takes a while but it will die. The Ford bendix just adds drama to a crappy situation.

  • Just ordered the NAPA part;   for $24.00 it will make a good spare for the trunk !!!

     Tks, Lance.

Here is a comparison of Ford and Hudson starter drives .No doubt these are NOT interchangeable.

Because I am not above embarrassing myself, I found a solution to my starter problem. Turns out not to be a starter problem after all. My good friend Jim Spencer stopped over to help diagnose the problem and found the answer. Weeks ago I took out the battery and when I put it back in, the ground strap was put in too close to fan and the fan was dinging the strap. Click, click, click. Thanks to all who replied. A lot of times the solution is too simple and easily overlooked.

  • John,

Glad you figured it out. If only all our problems were so simple :)

Well we all learned something about starters , good photo comparison of the drives.

    Thanks for starting the conversation.

I will say , having computer internet service makes owning these cars a little less

challenging , gives more time for enjoying them.

This one listed on e-bay has the wrong bendix installed. Someone is going to get a nasty surprise!

  • I wrote seller; he said it would be changed to say it had a Ford Bendix.
