I've read all the discussions on how hudson heads start life at 2 inches thick, some NOS heads measuring 1.940 or so. i've got a 1956 aluminum 308 head thats never been milled, it measures around 1.750 thick. were the 55-56 heads or at least the aluminum ones thinner than the 51-54 heads??

Did you mic it or use tape measure? That just doesn't sound right.0

tape...and I'm a tech!! micrometer says 1.840 at the bolt holes all around outside. anyway, it does not matter now on this head, just cleaned it up, corrosion took it's toll. it's junk anyway. so now I need a good head for this 1955 308 motor. still the aluminum 232 head dream to 7x modify, but i guess they are rarer than hens teeth. really wood like an aluminum 262 head that measures the 1.940 and thicker range and useable, probably a better reality0
