1936 Hudson Terraplane engine crank handle question

G'day,

Just wondering if engine crank handles are generic?

I'm currently missing one for my 1936 Terraplane.

I want to use one to turn the engine when tuning or moving the fly wheel - rather than yanking on the fan belt or "tapping" the starter

I see that I can buy a new crank handle from the Chev website for 1929 to 1953 engines

cheers Ken

The length may be different. You might be able to make one from a long socket extension ,

drill a hole and install a pin to fit the slot.

Than you can use a ratchet or breaker bar to turn it.

or you put the socket over the retaining nut , then slide an extension through the crank hole.

    No modification needed

Of course the crank handles on the late thirties cars were in two pieces.  You know that, right?  There is the handle (z-shaped, one end with a socket for the square end of the crank extension and the other for the lug bolts), and the long extension bar with the pin in one end that engages the special nut on the vibration dampener.  Those extensions were held by clips up near the hinges on the sedan models, and you can often find them still there, in derelict sedans that have almost rotted away.

Actually, I found my '37 crank handle amongst a bunch of Ford crank handles.  The key is to find one with the end that fits through the hole in your front bumper.  That is where the front of the extension bar engages the crank handle.  All of the Ford handles were similar to the Hudson crank handle but they wouldn't fit through the hole in the bumper.  So you might measure your bumper hole, then go to a flea market and look for a bunch of Ford cranks!

  • Wow, I think that I might actually have it already -  It could be used as a crank handle for the wheel jack right?

If so, the jack handle can be a multi-use item - engine crank and wheel jack crank - and here I thought I needed to have 2 separate handles

3 years I've had this car and still I'm learning what's right in front of me  :-) thanks, cheers Ken
