Hi All,   a 47 pick-up owner is looking for a gas tank. Told me a shop could not repair his
( but I don't know why exactly...). He would like to buy a good one. Are there any reproduction
on these like the ones for stepdown? Thanks, Michel

Comments

  • Michel, There is no reproductions tanks available One could be made but  readily available reproduced ones are not. . The other fuel tanks from 46-7 will work but their fuel necks will have to be removed for the truck fuel neck to be installed and soldered on. Maybe that night be easier for this man.

Thanks Lance, when you are talking about other fuel tanks from 46-7, are
these from trucks only or those from 46-7 Hudson cars could do?  Michel

Lance, reading again your answer, I think it means a car fuel tank can be used as long as we
interchange the fuel neck? If the guy would like a repro, who makes thse?
    Thanks again, Michel
  • The filler neck joins the tank in a different location than the cars. At least it does on my tank. Find out why the guy will not fix it.
I have been told that an 80's camero is a close fit.

Michel I am no expert on gas tanks, but the online review I conducted showed me a myriad of different tank suppliers. I was most impressed by the availability of composite and plastic tanks. I suggest that if the owner is seeking a reliable vessel vice a OEM replacement, match the measurements and filler requirements using online catalogs. My suburban uses a 40 gallon plastic tank and it is a tough piece of plastic!

    Hi Michel,
My answer depends on how much of a Purist you are. If you are open to bending the "rules" a little, I would go to Tanks Inc. and check out all of their poly tanks. It appears that your application would be at the rear of the truck under the bed. If this is so, you may consider one of their poly tanks. They give the sizes and volumes of all their tanks and best of all they are all up to all the national safety standards. I have purchased 3 of their tanks and quite pleased with all of them.
Short story: I had one of their poly tanks under my '47 Ford convertible and one day I needed to jack up the right rear of the car for some reason. I had my jack under what I thought was the right rear part of the spring pad and started raising the car. After raising the car 2 or 3 inches, I for some reason I bent down and looked under the car. Seems my jack was on my brand new poly tank and it was taking all that upward force. The car wasn't completely up off the ground but those few inches didn't seem to have hurt the tank. I would suggest not trying to do that dumb stunt but after 10 years, it has never leaked.
    Just my thoughts!
    Peace,
    Chaz

Since your tank is deeper than original tank by a little over an inch are you still mounting spare tire under tank?
