Brake drum puller
Can anyone tell me what style brake drum puller I need to pull the drums off my 1940? I don't have studs on the drum I have bolts that hold the wheel on. I tried to pull them off by hand but I had no luck. There is a thin piece of metal that is attached to the drum that reaches the outer edge of the drum and meets with the backing plate. I grabbed hold of that and pulled and it actually moves a little, but it seems too thin to use one of the pullers that have the arms with hooked ends that hooks around the outside edge.

Marvin, You need a dog bone drum puller. They are still available . You can get Chinese copies or an actual US made one although they tend to be a bit more expensive and a bit tougher to locate. You possibly can rent one or borrow one from someone in your area. If you want to buy a decent used US made one I'd be happy to help0

I borrowed a puller from a friend that is H shaped and has two pieces that fit into the open slots of the H. The pieces that fit into the slots have a small slot (best word I can think of) that one would think would fit over the lug bolts. The problem I had with that is that the lug bolts have a sloped shoulder under the head going down to the threads. The other problem I had with this particular unit is that the slots in the two pieces were too narrow to actually fit over the lug bolt. Is this similar to what you are speaking of?
If you can help me locate a dog bone drum puller that would work, I would be most appreciative.

OTC makes the tool. OTC 7394. Look on Amazon to buy one. Works good use you lug bolts to bolt it on a hammer the handle around the drums come right off.0

AND, if the drum doesn't turn, and the adjuster won't turn, it's rusted to the shoes, in which case, you'll need to remove the large nut on the top behind the backing plate. That will free the anchor bolt and release the shoes so they come off with the drum. Yes, the two hold-down pins will snap but they should be replaced anyway if things are that bad. Just keep hammering the dog-bone and it will eventually pop off.
Caution! Only unscrew the axle bolt about 1/8 of an inch. If you take it all the way off, you might find the drum on the other side of the garage...if it makes it through you. AND don't hammer on the end of the axle. It will break the spacer between the axels in the rear end.
