47 pickup steering gear box lube?

What type of oil or lube is used in a 47 pickup steering gear box? How do you tell the amount to put in?

A modern 85W-140 oil will do.  Fill until full.

John Deere corn head grease is one and Studebaker International sells a steering box grease that is used in these boxes as well. Both are a "wet" type grease.

Seems to me that you would want something really heavy, since (in my experience) these steering boxes tend to leak oil.  A heavier oil would be less likely to leak.  I think I'm using some sort of Model A gear oil, maybe 600 W or something!

Jon, If you want to do yourself a favor use Corn Head grease. It works well .

Penrite  Steering lube. Sold at Restoration  Supply Co. Escondido Ca. About $15 or so.
