Throw Out Bearing Retainer
I have a broke throwout bearing retainer on my 52 Hornet with a double lever transmission. What would cause this. Anyone have a spare they would be willing to part with? This is the tube that attaches to the bell housing with 3 bolts the throwout bearing rides on. For some reason the tube broke off. Thanks

You might try Doug Wildrick, he of course rebuilds clutches among other things, and may have some of these retainers lying around. http://wildrickrestorations.com/hudson-wet-clutch-parts.html

Sounds more like the nose of the front transmission bearing housing is broken off.0

Doug, Any chance you can get a picture of what it is you are seeking? I likely have the part but need to know exactly what it is you need.0

Geoff is right. The bell housing only has a hole in it.0

It does attach to the tranny and is what Geoff describes. Now what could cause this? Clutch cork is very thin on one side there was significant chatter. My guess is the throw out was slamming this part on take off via the chatter. I also have this on the club forum with pictures. Will also try to post them here. I do plan to see Doug for parts and advice. Plan to visit his shop. Maybe this part can be welded but prefer replacement. Hope this link works. There's some eye candy in there in addition to the tranny parts for those who view the link. The tan Hornet is my current focus. http://s666.photobucket.com/user/hudsn47/slideshow/0

My "guess" the transmission input shaft slide tube housing bolts were loose or the tube was bent. Alternatively the bushings in the throw out bearing cross shaft are bad, maybe also, and created pressure on the sleeve. Were the bolts on trans to bellhousing all tight?0

I do think the cross shaft bushings in the bell housing and the frame mounted shaft are too loose. Will be tending to those. Other than the thin cork every thing else looks ok.0

I'd check the release lever height closely while you are in the mood. The dimension isn't as critical as is keeping them equal. If one is out of whack, the T/O bearing will wobble with every revolution of the engine when the pedal is depressed and could be what broke the trans front bearing retainer. Do you recall any rattle when the clutch was "kicked"?

Frank, I dont recall any rattle with the clutch engagement just chatter. I plan to get a refreshed disk, throuw out bearing and PP along with reworking the bell housing and cross shaft pins and bushings. Also have to source a replacement throw out retainer. Want everything I can think of corrected while its all apart. Also doing alot of front end work while the engine is out. Big winter project that I hope to have done by spring. Doug0
