Is this a grinding sound?  Or just a whine?

If you are acquainted with older transmissions you'll know that they tend to be noisy.  I only raise this point because if you happened to be "new" to these cars, you might not realize that.

On the other hand, of course, there might indeed be something wrong.  Can you describe the noise it makes, and is that noise constant at all speeds, in any one gear, or does it only happen at low (or higher) RPM's?

Hi Jon, thank you for your comments. It appears to be noiser than the standard noisy gearbox sound and is made in first and second gears with top being a lot quieter. The noise is more of a high pitch whine. A would like to source a manual or on line manual for this vehicle. Also I need to apologise the year is in fact 1928. Rob.

2nd gear on the 28 Essex is straight cut & so pretty noisy. 3rd gear is straight through & quiet in comparison
Members of the HET Club have access to the extensive online library that Alex Burr maintains. You will find a pdf of the manual there to be downloaded.  The library alone is a good reason to join if you are not already a member as is the HET Forum ( different to this one)
This URL should get you there.

    HI Rob

The lay shafts / bronze bushings for 1st and 2nd could be worn and possibly the casting where the shafts are anchored. If worn and corrected could solve the majority of the excess noise. As David says, they are straight cut gears so will have noise that may concern you if you are not used to it. Check the shafts etc and see if there is an issue there

    Good luck

Dave Young, which shop manual (on the H-E-T online library) pertains to the 1928 Essex?  I looked through the list and concluded that no manuals were relevant past 1927, so obviously I missed something!

The Hudson Essex Service Manual for 1926 with updates taking it up to July 1929 is the one.
I'm pretty sure I sent a pdf of it to Alex some years ago.

Didn't realize that.  (I'll have to suggest to Alex that he re-label the '26 manual, so that folks understand that it contains info for later years!)
