Question about installed Carrier bearing 49 Commodore

We installed the carrier bearing just fine but when we got it off the jacks to test drive it we had kind of the same kind of worn out bearing sound coming from underneath. Someone told me that you are not supposed jack the wheels up off the ground because it causes the drive shaft to come out of sequence or time? Is that true? And if it is, what can I do to get it back in time or sequence?

  • Oh by the way, all unjointed were replaced and greased also.
  • Was it confirmed that the noise was from the carrier bearing? (stupid Q but I had to ask).

    Assuming that you re-assembled the shaft in the same orientation (splines in the same position) It could be that the U-joints weren't "in phase" when you started, so you put it back together out of phase, just as it was before. This causes a vibration/roar/rumbling, especially under load that can be destructive if not corrected.

    Not sure about the "stepdowns" but the earlier cars have an arrow on the end of the splined stub shaft and another on the mating yoke (no....really!) so that they can be assembled in the correct relationship. I would expect that the later cars would have the same markings at the slip-yoke in the center support ass'y.

    The warning about jacking is bogus......how else would you change a tire? It's possible that it happened to someone for some unrelated reason so it became "legend".
