12v conversion

Is there a reason why when a conversion is made to 12v a ballast resistor was used instead of just putting in a 12 volt coil? Thanks

The ballast resistor is built into most "12 volt" coils. Most if not all coils are 6 volt coils and work on 12 volts because the resistor is used. Keep your good OEM coil and add the resistor. Hemming motor news article on ignition coils hemmings.com/magazine/hmn/2006/06/Ignition-Coils/1280615.html
