SC vehicle registration

I recently purchased a car that was most recently titled in South Carolina.  On the SC title, the VIN is a 16 digit number that begins with the numbers 99 and ends with 37.  In NC, in order to get a valid title for a car previously titled in another state, you must show the car to a DMV inspector to verify that the VIN is correct, etc. The problem I have is that I can't find a number like that anywhere on the car.  The body serial number starts out 491 which is the correct specification (49 Super) for this particular vehicle, however it's not mentioned on the title anywhere.  I had the same problem with my Kaiser because SC had used the engine number as the VIN.  I was able to get it corrected as It was obvious that the engine number was incorrectly used as the VIN.  In this case, however, since the 262 head on this engine was replaced with 232 head, I have no idea where the 16 digit number came from.  Anyone familiar with how SC determined the VIN numbers on old cars?

  • You are correct on NC. I had 2 inspectors come to my garage (Greensboro) when I bought the car. They looked it over closely. Took photos of the engine and VIN tag.; stayed and talked a while.

Be sure and get an antique tag INITIALLY-- makes the value of car at $500. regardless, even if it is worth a million dollars--- tax will be $4.30 !!!

Guess you could get a blank VIN tag and put that number on it if all else fails?.  Park Waldrop is in Rock Hill.

Richard, I wish I had that info before I purchased my tag, it would have saved me over $230.00.  I had an inspector come to my house and he corrected the VIN on my Kaiser. I'm told now that the inspectors don't make house calls any more, which I either have to get it running or tow it to DMV.

Jason,  to clarify, that referred to property tax each year , not initial sales tax. You save the next year and every year thereafter.

I have always wondered how you legally drive for an inspection without registration, tag, or insurance ??? Suppose you would have to load it on a trailer or you would get a ticket once you got there !!!lol
