Head nuts.

Does anyone have a source for the special head nuts used on the 6 cylinder motors '34 thru '47?  These are 11/16" A.F. with 3/8"UNC thread.

Restoration Supply Co.in California has the wide nuts. I bought wide nuts from the local nut and bolt supplier, they were called "2H".    Bob C.

You can likely get them from Rainbow Bolt & Supply out of California

Thank you again.  I checked with the local engineering supplies, and I got a "Do you want fries with that" kind of look!

Geoff, McMaster Carr has this type under "heavy hex nut" a 3/8" nut 11/16" across flats. Them have them in various grades and finishes. Not sure if they deliver to NZ. Tom

Thanks Tom.  They won't deliver to N.Z, I have tried them before. Gets as far as checkout and then they cancel.  I guess we are not considered a friendly country anymore!

Hey Les, they only need to look at the western suburbs to realise there is a bigger threat there!

Geoff If all else fails I can purchase the nuts from McMaster and ship them to you. I shipped wheel bearings to Australia last year by parcel post and the cost wasn't to bad. Tom

That works.  I just relayed some parts to France since the vendor didn't ship international.  Buyer ordered and paid for them sot hey were a gift from me, so no duty.

The internal costs of making sure they were not infringing any of a million and one export regulations unfortunately lead McMaster a few years ago to say no to overseas one off sales.

A US address shipping service such as shipito.com can be useful to get around such situations. Unless of course you have a kind offer like that of 35Terraplane.

Digressing, I've used shipito a few times to get bigger and/or heavier items to Australia that won't fit into a USPS flat rate box. Way cheaper than USPS for that type of stuff.

EDIT Just had a look at the McMaster web page, those nuts are CHEAP - US$8.93 for a pack of 50 Grade 5 unplated. You wouldn't mess around trying to make the old dog eared nuts look respectable at that sort of money.

Being forever skeptical, I did a bit of further snooping on the 2H designation and found that it meets the ASTM 194/194M spec with the following general description:

"Standard Specification for Carbon Steel, Alloy Steel, and Stainless Steel Nuts for Bolts for High Pressure or High Temperature Service, or Both."

    I'm feeling much better now.

I'd sent the wheel bearings last year by parcel posts because after checking with UPS, DHL etc they wanted to get into the whole import duty thing. I also incorrectly assumed they'd be less expensive. I then went to the Post Office and not only was the cost much less they only asked what was in the package. I told them car parts for a friend of mine in Australia and that was that. I think is was about two and a half weeks transit. The money was done via PayPal so that private and nobodies business but between me and the club member in Australia. Tom
