WGD Carter.

Finally getting round to finding out why my '53 Hornet is hard starting and uneven running.   Turns out it has a WDO carby on it!  I can probably make it run better even with this, but the  metering rod setting is a bit of a mystery.   Anybody got the specifications of the Metering rod gauge?   I notice that the  anti-percolating valves are shut all the time, so that may explain the difficulty in getting correct idling mixture, and hesitation when opening throttle slowly.   Any tips welcome.  Better yet - a NOS WGD would be welcome.

Wow!   I will need a rebuild kit obviously.   Does anyone know if the auto choke cover will transplant?  There is no tag attached to the WDO on my Hornet.

    Geoff,

I have brand new WDO 648S on my shelf, I think I bought it out from the US many years ago, if I remember it would not fit my car at the time because I think it is for a LHD car. Not sure on that but there was a problem and not suitable.

Les, the 648S is for the Eight cylinder engine.  As the  Hornet is 54 cubic inches bigger it would not be matched to this.  I think this is what is on my car. hence the poor running. My car originally came form South Africa, so  who knows when the change could have occurred.  When  are you coming over to see us?

WGD was standard on the eights and 262s in '50, I believe the WDO may have still been used on the 232 but not sure.

I believe that all 232 engines had a single barrel WA-1 or the later versions of it, depending on year......for what it's worth.

It wasn't exactly relevant to the discussion, but I thought I'd throw it in anyway.....at the risk of appearing too nit-picky.

Thank you all for your comments.  believe it or not, I have had this car for 18 years, and this is the first time I have  noticed that it does not have the correct carburetor!  I have made significant improvement in starting and  running by  going over all the adjustments outlined in the 1950 Mechanical Procedures Manual. Auto choke was  carboned up badly,  anti-percolating valves not opening at idle, worn accelerator  pump linkage.  weak spring connecting the  pump bell crank to the linkage, etc. etc.   Along with a heavy duty battery and cable, it now starts instantaneously from cold.   Of course I should have done this when I first got the car, but I use only infrequently, and it really does need a complete engine rebuild.  When people stop bringing me work I may get on to it!    If anyone comes across a good WGD-776S  I'd be interested, but there's no urgency.    Thanks again,
    Geoff
