35T floor opening

Bob.I think it is for flow-through ventilation. I believe that there should be a screen and filter material in there. Experts here may correct me if I'm wrong.John0

There originally was a leather or composite material fitted to this opening which allowed for incoming air into the passenger compartment to exit the interior.

That is my understanding as well. I have a similar one in my '39 112 which has a muslin type filter in it0
-
It is a cloth muslin type of filter with a spring retainer above and below the floor. The spring retainer is just a rod bent in the shape of the hole slightly larger than the hole to retain the cloth across the hole. This way you could replace it from the top or bottom. My 37 has the same hole, you could make it yourself but my skills at sewing are not that great.

If I get chance to uncover the car I'll take a picture for you!0

Took this of my 35. Still have the back seat out as I haven't finished the wiring job I started in the summer of 2014. Things just keep getting in the way. I'm pretty sure it's original. The material looks and feels like leather or composite as 53Jet man indicated.

Today they call it an auto cabin air filter, LOL0

Ones in my '33-35 Ts over the years also leather like that and internal strip spring loaded. I agree it is a cabin "breather" of sorts. On a closed car, when the last door is closed, it gave a nice "whomp" sound that was lost in the change to all steel bodies - most of the industry still having wood body structures.

Bob,This is what the one in my 35 T looks like. It is leather like the the other commentators have indicated.I have not removed mine yet because the leather is so dried out I did not want to tear it but from under the car it looks like it would give access to the fuel sending unit.Mike0

Farmermike. Except it is NOT above the tank sending unit but rather in front of the tank and over the top of the differential. Body "breather". Great pics, thanks.

Mike,
I took this picture during the rewiring of the gas gauge. It's shows the body breather and the access cover to the gas gauge & gas pick up. The gas gauge access cover is behind the spare tire.

Tom,Great photo. Now I am really glad I did not wreck the breather trying to see what was under it. I did not even notice the access panel behind the tire.Thanks,Mike0
