Rerouting wiring harness

I'm getting ready to install the Autowire wiring harness in my latest project, a 1949 Super Six coupe.  When I rewired my Commodore Six, I was able to follow the original pattern since the upholstery had to be replaced anyway.  In the case of the coupe, the upholstery is in good shape and I don't know if I want to try to run the wiring from under the dash to the trunk via over the driver's side door.  Has anyone ran the wiring under the carpet or along the chassis as an alternative to going the route described earlier?

Thanks Ken.  I will probably go the under the carpet route and just splice a line into the dome light wire where it starts into the headliner.
  • I wrapped it all up and ran it through the driver's kickpanel and under the door sills in the rocker area. Came back in at the furthest inside corner of the left rear door sill, up the wheel well and into the trunk.

That's a good job.  It will be fine there as even the pre-made wiring harnesses reside in that area.

Ken, the vision of you carefully tucking that headliner in there reminded me of the guy with the two black eyes.  He was telling a friend how he got them.

Seems he was in church, and  when everybody got up to sing, there was a big lady in front of him and her dress was caught in her butt crack, so he reached over and pulled it out, and she wheeled around and gave him a black eye.

But how did you get the 2nd one?

Well, I figured she wanted it left in there so I put it back

I put a new harness on my Pacemaker a while back. On the tail lights, I really didn't want to undo the headliner either. I used an electrician trick I had learned. I taped the new trunk harness to the old one end to end and pulled it through. I know it has to come through a couple clips but was able to get it through them. I did have to undo some headliner at the A pillar and back near the rear window.  Have to admit it was a long shot but it worked. Picture shows the end of the trunk harness the replacement was connected to. You can see how bad the wiring was before it was all replaced with the YNZ harness!  Doug

Have Y&Z but when I installed backup lites, I ran the wire(two-one extra) along the inside of the sill. Easy. Gorilla tape !!. Tape and adhesives are very good now days. I also have 1000+ LED lights around 360 degrees on the bottom of the car, that you probably wouldn't notice off with the car on a lift. Lites are 1/2" apart embedded in plastic with 3M adhesive factory applied on back. Also used strongest 3M spray adhesive before installing sections and covered with waterproof 3M clear tape. Have 200+ red LEDs on inside of rear bumper {connected to tag light}.

Point is: wire can be installed on bottom of car without fear of dangling, if done correctly ! Of course you don't apply all this over dirt.

Oh, before anyone asks: I did all that because it is illegal to install flame throwers !!
