Something is a-miss

Bugger, last fall the 40 254 started missing.  A compression  check gave about 35 lbs is #7.  Poured some Sea Foam in it and left it to soak for the winter.  Fired it up yesterday and after freeing a couple of valves it ran pretty good..still with a slight miss.

Took it around the pond..about 1/4 mi and it started running rougher and began a sharp mechanical rattle which came and went.

Bit the bullet and shut 'er down for repairs.  gonna pull the head tomorrow.  Something let loose in there.  About ready to paint too..blue, as Allen gave me 2 gal of NOS Hudson laquer.

May not get it on the road again this year again.

Drat!  I hope that it was just a metallic sounding rodent that got knocked in the head by a piston rod, and expired quietly in the oil pan.
  • Best be safe and see if you have a small problem than risk it by running it into a big problem - love to know your findings cheers ken

pulled the head today and everything rotates OK but #7 valve appears to be bent.  There were a couple of valves sticking.  I think you're on it Ken.

I'm gonna pull the motor and check everything out.  Polish the valve stems and the guides to stop the sticking..  The rings are new so shouldn't have a problem there.

A clattering lifter no doubt, and a bent valve head.

Pulled the 36 Terraplane out of the shed today.  Gonna get it running again.  Swap radiators and fix a couple of broken exhaust studs. etc.

Larry, you've checked the valve springs?

I dont know anything about an 8, but since the Rings are new the motor has been apart previously and depending on what the Tappet looks like, why not just do a valve job, especially on #7 saving yourself from the labor of removing..  My guess the Keeper may not have locked completely in the groove then eventually worked out...Im all for doing things thorouly when necessary, but there have been times that ive replaced 1 Piston and a valve with good success for a Driver. Just a thought.

OK, I'll be on it soon.  My curiosity won't let me wait 'till winter

This last pic was too fuzzy.  Stupid LG phone keeps reverting to phone memory which I can't upload.  This is a pic of the phone with the digital camera then cropped.  Not much better.

Well, here's my missing problem, and the reason for the low compression on #7.  this exhaust seat is really bad.  I didn't do a valve job on this one so out it comes and goes to Boyd's motor works for a valve job.  I'll clean up the other valves and the guides and get rid of the sticking too.
