Wheel cylinders for 36-47
This is the latest result from my investigation re the 1-inch diameter wheel cylinders. These are used for both 10 and 11-inch shoes from 36 thru 47.
The 6 cylinders used the 10-inch shoes and the 8 cyl and trucks used the 11-inch shoes.
I did this for myself and another guy. I've replaced them on my 36T, 40H and 47PU over the years so I know they work. I just hadn't recorded everything
All of mine use 3/16 lines. The threads are not American standard, but specialized threads for inverted flare fittings. Confirmed from a website, and with my mics and thread gages from my toolmaking days.
When you go to buy these, from Amazon, RockAuto etc, you will see that some of them are listed for front and/or rear depending on application.
Some of these cylinders are used on several makes over several years, including non-Hudsons If you do a little Googling, there are several other
manufacturers who make the same cylinder with different or similar part numbers. I'm standardizing on Wagner here.
Wagner WC78975 is for the Right Rear 3/8 -24 thread hole fits a
1/8 inch brake line.
You must use an adapter (Edelmann 258430 or equivalent) for 3/16 lines with
7/16-24 thread
Wagner WC78974 is for the Left Rear 3/8 -24 thread hole fits a 1/8 inch brake line.
You must use an adapter (Edelmann 258430 or equivalent) for 3/16 lines with 7/16-24 thread
Wagner WC 9337 is for the Right Front and has a 7/16-20 thread
to fit front hoses on Hudsons
Wagner WC 9336 is for the Left Front and has a 7/16-20 thread to fit front hoses on Hudsons
the outlet threads for all of these angle toward the rear which is why there are different numbers for either side
I'd welcome any info you find to the contrary but I think I've got it right.

Several models of Cadilac from the late 50's to the mid 60's used the same wheel cylinders as '36-'47 Hudson.

The plot thickens a bit. Apparently there are at least 2 different front hoses.
The bottom of the front cylinder bore has an 'innie'
Some hoses have an 'innie' but are too short to reach the bottom before bottoming out on the hex. These have to be sealed with a copper washer. (I see that my 36 and my 47 are this way.
Other hoses have a longer thread with an 'outie' which matches the 'innie' on the cylinder. (My 40 has this kind of hose.)

As of May 4, here are a couple new front brake parts you can still buy locally, for a '37 Hudson or Terraplane:
Front left wheel cylinder: Carquest cross-referenced the original Wagner #WC-9336, with a modern-day "Wearever" WCA7563 wheel cylinder.
Carquest cross-referenced the original United #4900 front brake hose with their own CWH BHA4900 hose. I'm told that Coni-Seal part #188269 will also fit (sold by Rock Auto, I believe). The beauty of using Carquest is that they can have it ready for you the following morning, you don't have to wait for USPS or UPS.
Anyway, I bolted all of this onto my car today. It fits, and now I have brakes (that don't swerve) again.
