(Edit>> Thread continues 5/13/16)
Starting a thread for this subject as I install a system I received late this morning.
I look forward to being able to see what is behind me in the Hornet. NOTE: 12 volts only
Will post comments as this installation goes forward.
Will have circuit for turning on when shifting to reverse,
and also a switch to have camera on all-the-time so as to see to the rear.
Perhaps you might also want to do this or not; anyway, here goes.

Camera is located in the middle under the license plate light(if you can't located it)-almost stealthy.
Edit: this camera is NOT being used.

Richard, I've thought about putting one of those on the 49 Super Six I bought.  But since it doesn't have backup lights, I figure it might not be worth the effort....

Could not eliminate parking guide lines on the monitor {originates from camera circuitry}.   Had option of sending unit back or getting another camera with option for parking lines. Purchased this camera. Photo below shows it next to a quarter; item measures 3/4" x 3/4" x 1"deep and will mount on one top hole on license plate.

I will put camera that came with monitor kit on eBay for same amount.
Just tested unit and it is exactly what I wanted. Monitor is mounted on the caddy I have anchored on the transmission hump; in front of heater. Mounted with the included mount that is not listed on included materials.

Photos thus far; camera not permanently mounted nor wires permanently installed. Photos during initial test.
Monitor ( 7" x 5" ) is shown with flash used to show caddy it is installed on. Monitor photo w/o flash has illuminated control buttons covered with black tape which is the way it will be once set. Monitor is, of course, back under dash which will eliminate glare.
    NOTE: the image in the monitor is as you would turn around in the car and look backwards;
it can be reversed in system to show a 'mirror' image. Not sure yet about this.
Camera {with quarter} is the way received.
The camera was sitting on rear bumper looking out garage door at my gravel driveway.

More once wiring and camera are installed. Will likely wire with 2 options: system on continuously when ignition on or system on when shifting to reverse; with 3-way toggle switch; not sure yet.
Note on the photo below of monitor and adjustable mount that the plastic mount ears bend & can be screwed to the transmission tunnel if you don't have a caddy as I do. Also comes with a suction cup mount (aka Garmin).

New camera installed on upper left license plate hole.(checked image but not completed wiring yet) !!

Everything GOOD {fyi: trunk not closed all the way}!!

Edit: Electrical scheme is simple: use a SPDT toggle; from center pole to the monitor & camera; from one outer pole to the backup light side of the reverse switch on Hydra-matic (or a lever switch on a manual??); from the other outer pole to a + wire when the ignition is turned on. That way you can switch between video when switching to reverse only or video when you are driving the car. Use a different switch if you want an 'off'. Run wires and then SMILE !!
Edit 2: that switch does have 'OFF' in the middle position.

You should see prices on each of the Amazon links above ?? Advise if you do not.
I have not listed the first camera on eBay nor have I purchased the toggle switch, but will this afternoon.

Completed the wiring today and the project seems to be perfect. Switch is on-off-on that gives 'on whenever in reverse' or 'off' or 'on all the time the ignition is on'.
I wire along the inside of the right side rail; did the backup lights this way also. I have a lift so it is not that difficult. I first spray with heavy duty adhesive then use Gorilla tape every 4" or so; you can't tear it off !!
I drilled with hole saw{1/2" for the video RCA end} thru the floor at rear of step down below the drivers right leg then ran the video/power cable to the video monitor. Then seal top and bottom with dum-dum.
Switch is mounted where the 6V instrument rheostat is located [that I don't have].
    I still don't like wiring under the dash---tough !!!
I am going to enjoy seeing behind my Hornet now.  el fin~~~~
Edit: will take several photos later when I get back on the road (been rainy here) that will show what cars, etc, etc look like in the monitor.

Still raining here but here is the wiring diagram; it is simple. The video connections are not shown but goes from the camera to the monitor with the supplied cord. Note that the camera/monitor wiring is at the bottom of my hazard wiring setup. If that also interests you, note the diodes used to isolate things. Everything works as it should.

Great information. I have been thinking of having one on the motor home for connecting the trailer. Might save a lot of getting out and checking to see where everything is! Looks like it's less $$ than I thought.

I put a wireless 4 camera system on my truck (1) and trailer (3).  It works well but a wired one would work better.  My only comment is don't cheap out on the camera.  The backup camera on my truck, the plastic lenses has fogged up and the image is blurry at best.  So time to replace with a good glass lensed camera.  they are inexpensive but beware of the cheap ones.

  • Most folks forget that the cameras are not necessarily waterproof. I put silicone sealer around where the wires went into the back of the camera where it was open somewhat. An automatic car washer would certainly not be advisable.

    Very good point--this is a $20. camera so time will tell;But one of the bigger brands: Pyle {still made in China !}
albeit, I have only washed my car once in 2-1/2 years. Don't drive in the rain; and use detail spray.
This camera is also hidden under the tag shelter, so it might endure.
Amazon has a lot of camera/monitors plus the user comments to go with them.Check them out~~
