Hi all,

I have been hunting for an old classic to revamp (not restore and not to street rod/rat rod).  Essentially something with great lines, classic history, and enough work needed to keep me interested (I don't want to just buy a done car).

I stumbled upon a very cool (IMHO) 1948 Hudson Commodore Coupe 8-cyl.  I love the patina and plan on simply clearcoating it to keep it from rusting.  The interior is shot so hopefully I'll be able to do a nice classic tuck and roll using the original seat bases.  Eventually I'd like to make some nice door cards, get a white headliner, etc etc.  But for now I need to focus on safety and driveability (I'm selling a  motorcycle to buy this so I can have a cruiser for the whole family).

I'm a little nervous to be honest.  I've rewired cars before and done disc swaps, brake lines etc.  Built a handful of motorcycles.  But I know nada about Hudsons. I just fell in love with the car and am taking the risk.  I'll be postinga  million questions so please bear with me!!

Look forward to future interactions.

    Jason,

    Welcome to the forum...
Go to the link below and read about the Hudson Essex Terraplane Club, then send me your snail mail address and I will send you a complimentary copy of the White Triangle News.

  • Welcome Jason - I was in the same boat as you 3 months ago.  I picked up a '50 Club Coupe that sounds like it is in similar shape...body is great but the interior needs help.  I too was new to Hudsons and the folks on this site have been fantastic with providing knowledge and parts.  I joined the national club but also recently joined a local chapter and met some great folks in person...and their beautiful cars.  Welcome!

Welcome to the Forum, Jason!  As John Forkner suggested, now that you have a Hudson you might want to check out the Club, because it's an invaluable clearinghouse of information, and a portal to the worldwide network of Hudson enthusiasts.

Speaking of which: where are you located?  The Club has about 40 chapters around the U.S. and (assuming you live in the U.S.!) you may be located near one of their centers of activity.  (Generally, chapters usually welcome non-members to their gatherings, but after your tenth visit to one of their meets they may strong-arm you to join!)  Or you might just happen to live near a fellow '48 owner, who might take you under his (or  her!) wing and give you the kind of information you need.

Most parts are relatively easy to find if you know where to look (often the parts are still generally available or are being reproduced).  And, with a few notable exceptions (one being the cork clutch, the other being the unit body) they are mechanically put together like most other American cars of their era.  Compared to today's cars, they're very easy to work on.

Best of luck with your "new" Commodore Eight.

    Thank you all very much!!!

I will do as advised and check out the club.

I appreciate the warm welcome.  I am as nervous as I am excited.
