Clutch adjustment??

My '49 262 Super Six clutch grabs all the way at the top....the very top. At rest, the clutch pedal itself is right smack up against the floorboard, no rubber seal, spring or any space for them. Is this basically bad news and I need to replace the clutch etc, or is it adjusted improperly?

While I'm at it....is there anyway of knowing if I have a 9" or 10" clutch without removing it?
Thanks

  • Ok, got clutch to engage nicely just about two inches off the floor. However, now I only have first and reverse, linkage will not go over to second or third. I may have messed up shift linkage alignment when I took dashboard out to paint it. Does anyone know the procedure for readjusting the shift linkage? Thanks
  • It feels like it has the movement to cover the whole H pattern, but when the car is running you realize it's not moving out of the reverse/first quadrants. The car has sat a long time while all wiring was being done and upper column shifting mechanism has been unassembled......could've been reassembled incorrectly. Shop manual does not provide clear help about column/shift assembly, can anyone give me clear directions? Thanks

When you pull the shift linkage up, it pushes a cable to shift the tranny to the low/rev position.  There is an adjustment on the end of the steering column.

  • It seems my problem is when I push the linkage down I'm not getting into second and third I vaguely remember having difficulty getting the shift handle all the way into the bracket that holds it against the column. Was there a particular way I should have inserted it so it would align with whatever there is inside that helps it pull and push to get all the gears?
