Horn just started blowing

I turned the corner the other day in my 48 Commodore and the horn started blowing and wouldn't stop.  I'm assuming that the horn relay is shot.  Anybody ever had that happen?  Is the relay the problem or should I look elsewhere?

  • Yes.  Remove the horn button and look for a possible malfunction in the contacts under the button.  It could be that, simply by turning the wheel, you caused the button's contacts to close the circuit.

Disconnect the horns themselves from the relay, before you start poking around.  That way you'll only hear a click each time you complete the circuit.  Either that, or wear some good ear plugs!
  • Probably the insulation on the wire going down thru the center of the column has all worn off in one spot. Disconnect the wire coming out of the steering column and going to the horn relay to check it. Replkace the wire and it should be O.K.
  • You need to cut the old horn button wire close to the steering wheel and crimp/solder the end to a new wire. The end is a special shape to ground through the horn ring.
