Oil pump and distributor positioning

Well, it looks as though I put my oil pump in, in the wrong position. I can get my motor running, but I can't time it because there isn't enough rotation at the distributor hold-down bolt. I don't have the special alignment tool required to align the oil pump shaft, so I think it will be trial and error until I get the gear teeth in the right place.

Can anyone tell me where the right place is? I suppose the best way to ask the question is, what clock position should my rotor point to, when I am at #1 firing position? It seems to me that it used to be just a touch before 12:00 before I took it apart.

Any suggestions?

The hold down bracket can be loosened and moved on the housing with the 7/16 headed bolt on the bottom side of the distributor. This will give you plenty of adjustment.

Hudson used a Kent Moore alignment tool to put the oilpump into the correct position. A member of the HET community manufactured and sold duplicates of the KM tool. Possibly someone will have one to lend?

I still make that tool for aligning the distrib. I have two ready to ship and can make more - they are not a big seller so I don't expect to be overwhelmed with orders. If unable to borrow one I can sell you one. Cost is $35 plus $11 shipping in USA. I take PayPal or personal check. Thank you.

    bushing replacement I also make.

It's nice to have #1 at 1 o-clock but the engine doesn't care where it is, as long as #1 wire is lined up with the flywheel TDC (top dead center) on the compression stroke, which you test by holding your finger over #1 plug hole while you crank it over and it blows your finger off.  Of course you need to have the other wires in order ie

153624 on a six or 16258374 on the eight.  I've never used an alignment tool.

Just set the distributor where you want #1, check the offset on the end of it and set the oil pump at that position.  Be aware the pump will rotate a little as the gear is helical, and compensate for it, or back it off and try it again..

  • If the HET doesn't touch the 'g' it doesn't do anything ??

For the bushing $35 plus $6 Priority mail. Remember the bushing is for the step-down 6 and 8 cyl and I think it fits the Jet. Thank you Gert (pronounced Ghiet )
