Disc's Upgrade

FYI

Another way to update Hudson to Disc Brakes...First Step, remove your Hubs, then remove the Drums, and backing plates.
BRACKET
Cut a Bracket from a pc of 1/4" or 3/8" flat steel plate like pictured below. The bracket must be mounted at rear of spindles with caliper bleeder UP. Trace your backing plate to spindle bolt holes to ensure accuracy. Then measure Centers from backing plate rearTop hole Up 4 & 7/16" to caliper front mounting hole. Note; The Top caliper hole is aprx 1 & 13/16" 'Back from Verticle' dead center or at 1:00.... The Bottom Rear backing plate hole centers are 4 & 1/8" out to lower caliper hole center. Center to Center measurements are aprximate since no machinist. If slightly off will just rotate the caliper slightly.
However, The Caliper Mount hole measurements are 'Very Critical' since these two holes will need tapped 7/16" SAE.... My bracket measured 7" front to rear Centers, but double ck distance with your own caliper.

ROTOR
 Buy 2001 - '04 Chrysler Sebring # RTR76921 ($35 each)
Take Rotors & hubs to a Machine Shop to turn down so slip onto the Hubs. I also had the O.D. turned .125 but afterward didnt think was necessary.  Suggest Counter sink (2) 1/4"Screws Rotor onto Hub so dont rotate when installing a wheel

For a Pilot,  I drilled & tapped one rivet hole 5/16' for a 1 3/4" Bolt

CALIPERS, PADS, HOSES, HARDWARE
 Buy for mid 70's Camaro

WHEEL BOLTS
Buy 1/2 x 2" Grade 8 then install from back of hub, Or drill Hub threads slightly, then buy Dorman #610 289 Studs to press in then use normal wheel tapered Nuts

SPACER
A 3/8" Spacer is required using Hudson wheels and width not noticible.. Spacers are available from Summit, Speedway, or E Bay $18 Pair
(I dont feel slight grinding caliper outer edge pictured was necessary using 3/8" spacer Spacer)

 RESIDUAL VALVE
If using under floor Master Cyl, Buy a 2 lb Residual Valve to install near the Master to prevent drain back from calipers(eBay $10)

What year Hudson's? Can you post more pics including the back side? Nice job!

10 psi valve to go in the line going to the rear drum brakes. Need the 2 psi valve in the line going to the ft disk brakes unless your remote fluid container is mounted on the firewall.

This is an excellent thread, especially if we get more pictures and can determine what year (s) Hudson's this will work on.

    FY.I.

Attached picture of the back side of the completed assembly.. The bracket bolts flush to the spindle with no spacers needed.
.Incidently, the Backing Plates interchange all the way back to 1937 Hudson's, maybe further... This installation is on a Stepdown with 15" wheels so naturally there would be more clearance with 16" wheels.

Thanks Ol Racer. Always great to see your creations. The hard part, for me anyway, is figuring out what off-the-shelf rotors to use.

That's brilliant! I would love to have disc brakes on my 37 coupe.
  • Nice, wish they made kits for the 37 pickups. This is a great work around.

  • If I print that caliper bracket will it be to size or scaled?
    Can you give critical measurements?
    Thank you for this!

    FYI

No, the picture would not be accurate if printed from the Post. I could try e mailing you a copy.
