Question about truck bed

Hi all, I have been asked at shows and at cruse nights, why are the well wells in the pickup squared off and run to the front of the bed?  What I have come up with is that you can run boards across the extended wells to make a shelf to load items on.  What do all of you know about this feature?

    Anyone know why the inside wheel well is boxed?

    So they could use the rear axle assembly they were already building.
    They also added a fender spacer to use fenders already in use
