The tightening spec called out in the '34-'39 MPM is 630 in. lbs (52.5 ft/lb) but the spec for the same engine in the '42'-47 MPM is 40-45 lb. Hmmmmm. I wonder if there was some issue with the high torque spec in the earlier book. 50-55 is pretty high for a 3/8" UNF bolt/nut of any type IMHO. I've been using the lower spec and, so far, none of them have flown apart.......so far.

Hmmmmm. Isn't that what I said? 50-55 is typically a 7/16ths spec range for SAE grade 5 or ASTM A-325 fasteners.

Unless altered since production, up through '37 the #44713 bolts were cross drilled for cotter pins (or Carter pins as the amateurs say) and they were undrilled from '38 on. The parts book advises using the later, undrilled  #155655 bolt with the #155656 nut and the #170105 "Pal-Nut" or "Companion Nut".
