changing rear engine mounts, 1952 with hydramatic

I need to change the rear engine mounts in my 52 and I can't find a reference in the shop procedure manuals.  So looking for steps on how to do this with engine/tranny in car.  The right side mount appears very accessible.  The left side one looks like it's going to be a lot tighter even after unhooking some of the linkage next to it.
I'm imagining to loosen the front engine mounts and perhaps lifting the engine up a bit?
Am getting ready to go out of town for a few days and am hoping to tackle it when I get back.
Thanks in advance.

  • I just changed the mounts on my 51 Hydramatic last week after buying two new mounts at the National. I used a 4 post lift as Ken did. It took less than an hour. I like to loosen all of the bolts slightly before getting the jack in the way. I didn't touch the front mounts. I removed the cotter pins from the tranny linkage and just swung it out of the way. Remove the bottom four bolts in the crossmember and put a block of wood at the front of the tranny with a jack being careful not to push the pan in. Jack it up off of the crossmember. I used a rather long extension and swivel socket on 3 of the 4 bolts holding the mounts to the tranny. On the drivers side lower bolt at the tranny I had to use a curved box wrench usually called a starter/manifold wrench. Replace the mounts tighten the 4 bolts at the tranny and lower everything enough to get the 4 bottom bolts started really good you may have to use a punch or pry bar to move the tranny enough to line up all 4 bottom bolts before lowering it all the way back to the crossmember. Check and make sure all 8 bolts are tight, Reconnect linkages and your done. Ed Moore

I agree with the above.  It's a no-brainer if you remove the tranny pan inside the car.

Thanks for the tips.  It was an "in the garage, on jack stands" operation.  A little slower, but that's what I had to work with.  I used a jack under the tranny to lift it and it gave me a little side to side ability.  Removed the carpet and the access panel from the floorboard (left the seat in).  The right side one was pretty easy.  Left one was a little more challenging, especially the lower bolt.  Not a lot of room in there for fingers and not much sight line.

Definitely well deserved.  Both of the old mounts nearly separated into two pieces.

So bull_islander, you have a '52 C8 with a Hydramatic?  Would like to have a ride in that.  How does she perform?
