I HAVE LOOKED YEARS FOR AN AEROSOL PAINT THAT WOULD LOOK LIKE CHROME AND NOT LIKE ALUMINUM.
WELL, I HAVE FOUND THE CLOSEST YET.    IT IS VALSPAR,  #66010, BRILLANT SILVER,
IN A 12 oz AEROSOL CAN AT LOWES. Use thin coats.
Edit on all this:  It works ok--my problem was I was not letting the primer dry completely not the chrome paint dry completely; Do not hurry this --let dry for several days; in the sun if possible !!! Yes, it might fade later--but it is the best thing going now [for paint]
EDIT: here it is at Lowes (hard to find online; but it is at the store)

    Richard,

I was just researching chrome powder coating today.  I have a few small parts on my Packard that need to be completely disassembled before chrome plating.  I am hoping that the powder coat will look nice and be a little more durable than spray paint.

I have used the Valspar on my 1931 Franklin. Chroming on small pot metal parts can be dangerous for the part's sake. Have seen the sprayon ad for a long time now but have never seen it applied.

Most all of the Franklin is Bright Nickel, not Chrome.

Haven't used the Valspar on the Hudson. Don't think it would be extremely durable for a car that stayed outside all the time, but mine are garaged.  It is the brightest I have seen to be a 'paint'.

Might want to check out the liquid chrome that Eastwood has maybe for the Packard. You spray it on yourself on a black epoxy matrix. OR try the Valspar on something--ONLY $5.98 for 11 oz.

  • Try Eastwood extreme bonded chrome powder coat. You can see yourself in it. More durable than paint also. Closest to chrome plating I have seen yet.

    Thanks Richard.......
  • When I had a small motorcycle shop I looked into purchasing a SpectaChrome system to get some other revenue in the door during the winter months. You can "chrome" just about anything with it but it takes a lot of work to prepare the substrate.  http://www.spectrachrome.com

My experience of spray-on chrome is it looks good initially, but eventually goes a matt finish as it is exposed to sunlight.
  • That was one of the other reasons as to why I didn't purchase the system.  I couldn't find many testimonials that mentioned durability or fading over time. It looks too good to be true.
