overdrive now in 12 volt/negative ground
1948 hudson commodore 8 with overdrive.I have driven the car with no problems since I put in Y-n-z harness and one wire alternator 20 years ago.
I just replaced the transmission and O.D. with an Al Saferin rebuild
1. I know i'm supposed to have a resister to reduce the voltage to the solenoid. Can anyone supply a part # and source? And does it go in the wire to the relay? Does the reverse polarity make a difference?
2. The solenoid has three terminals (that are supposed to be numbered) but are not. Does anyone have an illustration of which wire goes to which terminal. ( took pictures before I took the old transmission out but lost my cell phone). I'll find it the day after i buy a new phone.
I know it's late to get religion but I don't want to mess this up That's what happens when you get to my age.

Fred, the resistor goes in the wire attached to terminal 3 on the solenoid. See layout of terminals below.
The solenoid isn't polarity-sensitive. The only thing that is would be the coil (be sure the neg terminal goes to the distributor) and sometimes the radio.

Here's pic of the terminal numbers. The center one is 6, to the left is 4, and to the right is 3. If YnZ stuck to the original color code:
The wire on 3 should be yellow, and coming from 5 on the relay. Here's where you insert the resistor.
The wire to 4 on the solenoid should be black, heavier gauge than the others, and coming in from 4 on the relay.
The wire to 6 on the solenoid should be green, and coming from2 on the relay.
Terminal 7 isn't used on Hudsons.
