Clutch/Trans slipping, coasting????

After finishing the 12v conversion on my '49 262 w/ 3sp OD ( 12v overdrive solenoid not bought yet, so OD is disconnected ), I adjusted clutch as best I could and took it for it's maiden voyage. All went well but I noticed a little slippage type feel from first to second and second did not immediately engage when I downshifted from third to second.
I did not get a chance to change the clutch fluid yet but plan to do so. When adjusting the clutch freeplay, I noticed that I could not get more than 1" of freeplay because if I tried for more, the pedal would not return all the way.
Can anyone give me advice as to how I could eliminate the "slipping" and what seems like a small case of coasting if I don't keep my foot on the gas while driving?
Thank you

Is the OD knob pulled out ? If it's not. the car will freewheel. Maybe that is what you are feeling?

Would it do that even though the solinoid is not wired? I'll it out when I get home. Thanks Dave
  • The knob is pushed all the way in!

Knob in = free wheels under 20 mph or so (and "enables" overdrive, allowing you to engage overdrive by lifting foot from gas pedal over 25-30 mph).  Once in overdrive, transmission is in direct drive.

Knob out = locked into conventional direct drive, 3-speeds, no "slippage".

If the wiring is not connected, with the knob pushed in it will freewheel when coasting at all speeds.
  • Problem solved, so happy. Pulled out knob and the car has the power and drivability that I remember my '51 hudson had when I was 17. Big difference. Thanks everyone!
