1937 Terraplane truck What model ??

Hello,
I know the truck shared much with car version. But which version? My vin starts with a 70, what model matches up with that? I tried to search for model numbers but couldn't find anything.
I need to get new windshield glass cut (among other parts) and I'm sure I will be asked the name of the model.

Thanks,
Raul

Short wheelbase modes (1/2 ton) had a six foot or so bed and were model 70.  The larger "Big Boy" (3/4 ton) version has nearly an 8 foot bed and were termed model 78.

I don't know about the frame (possibly the truck has a modified one) but the basic car that matches, would be the standard Terraplane model 70, 71 or 72.  (70 was the "utility" stripped down version, 71 was the "low trim level", 72 was the "high trim level".  But they're all basically the same car when it comes to hood, fenders, cowl section....and windshield.)

If you have a usable windshield glass (even if yellowed or cracked) a local shop should be able to use this as a pattern to cut.  All 1937 Hudson or Terraplane closed cars, would have used the same windshield I think.  (The '37 convertibles had a "chopped" windshield.)
  • Thanks for all the information. I guess I was trying to match up the model 70 to a name. Like De Luxe or Super from this website.

Not sure how to make this a usable link but you should be able to cut and paste into your browser.

Hudson advertised their "commercial cars" in separate brochures from the regular cars.  Go here: http://digital.hagley.org/islandora/object/islandora%3A2185346#page/1/mode/1up   Push left or right arrows to change pages.

The commercial cars came in two models:
    Model 70 = 117 inch wheelbase
    Model 78 = 124 inch wheelbase.

The "Deluxe" was always a Model 71 & only available in passenger car bodies.
The "Super" was always a Model 72 & only available in passenger car bodies.

Several "commercial" (model 70 & 78) body styles were available from the factory: utility coupe (with a roll-out pickup bed), utility coach (with removable back seat), panel truck, station wagon, pickup truck, taxicab.  Or you could buy just the cab and chassis and put your own body on the frame.  Sometimes you could get a particular body style in one wheelbase only, sometimes in both.  I can't recall if the pickup truck was available in both the 70 and 78 (long-wheelbase Hudson pickups were called "Big Boys").  Someone else can answer that definitively
  • Thanks for taking the time to write that out. Makes more sense now.
