I just came back from Napa and they have nothing for the front brakes. Im looking for wheel cylinders, hoses, and shoes. I was hoping to find these parts locally so I can return them if they are incorrect.
Part numbers would be great too.

Thanks for the help,

That is when I ordered a new front wheel cylinder and new front hoses for my '37 Terraplane car (truck's the same, I think). They ordered it in, had it the next day.  This was a Carquest branch.

I'm not aware of modern replacements for the shoes, though.  You may need to get yours relined.

However, be very careful: some places show an interchange with certain later-model Fords but this proves not to work, because of the position of the pin at the top of the backing plate.
  • Thanks Jon, I just found your comments about Carquest and they were very helpful. Just ordered the wheel cylinders and 2 brake lines.

    Hope they fit okay!

The only snag might be if a previous owner re-did the brakes and (lacking Hudson parts) slipped something "Chevy" or "Ford" in there!

Let us know how it worked out.
  • Bad news.
I pulled the front drums off and there is nothing inside except for the wheel cylinder. Great.
The rear drums had everything so Im going to try to fit the shoes and springs and everything else (except the parking stuff) into the front drums.
If anyone has any ideas why this wont work, let me know.

    Thanks

I've never had to start from scratch, but....aren't all those components still readily available?  The springs and clips and things that hold the shoes in, are sort of "universal".  (Of course you have to match them up for length, etc.).  The shoes can probably be found, maybe already re-lined,  The cylinders are available new.  The adjuster thingie at the bottom, might fit other makes but if not, try asking around amongst the vendors who regularly advertise in the WTN. Or there may be antique car brake specialists who would have this stuff....look in Hemmings.  There is nothing exotic in a Hudson brake system, it was used in any number of cars during that era and many of the parts are interchangeable and still available.

I'd suggest taking the parts (the ones you DO have) to your local NAPA dealer, and be sure to talk to someone behind the counter with some grey hair, and an interest in helping you.

Northwestern Auto Parts has a large inventory of "older" stuff:  http://www.northwesternautosupply.com/

Here is but one company that specializes in brake parts.  They do NOT list Hudson, but mostly GM; however, GM, Hudson and lots of other makes used the same parts. You could contact them with the description and dimensions of the various springs, adjusters, clips etc., that you need.  Chances are, they might have them.  http://harmonclassicbrakes.com/   Here is the sort of stuff they carry:

  • Thanks Jon.
The parts book shows the brake shoes as being the same (RF/RR AND LF/LR). So no issues there. Hold down kits are everywhere, I just wasn't sure about the rest of the springs. Ill use the old ones as necessary. Front drums were dropped off today to be turned. They are pretty nasty looking inside.

I got shoes for my 36 at Advance.  They listed them for 46/7  Same shoe except for the hole for the cam, which I drilled.
  • I don't have an advance auto here but Ill check at some the local shops.
The brake shoes I do have, are already getting relined.  The pins that go to the wheel cylinders are pinned to the shoes. Never seen that before.
