Motor mount replacement

I need to replace the motor mount on the passenger side of a 262 ci motor.  It looks like someone took a torch to it, then stepped on it for good measure.  The one on the driver's side is fine.  I have a cherry picker and an engine hoist bracket.  I'm thinking I can just raise the engine enough to remove the offending mount (assuming I have enough room to fit the hoist in the engine compartment without having to remove the hood.)  Should I loosen the mount on the driver's side simultaneously or can I get by with just lifting the engine on the right side?  If anyone has any suggestions on a better way to proceed, it will be highly appreciated.

You can do that.  You can also just use a jack on passenger side from the bottom.

The right side mount is compressed by engine torque so commonly is the first to need obvious replacement.

However be aware that the torque is also trying to lift from the left side mount.  The rubber vulcanizing can get torn apart by the torque if it is still the 60 year old original.  The mount might still appear to be fine but is just sitting there unattached.

Your comments are all accurate on methodology.  No requirement to unbolt the left.   Agree w/ RL that it is just as simple to push up from the bottom - just don't dent the oil pan.

Thanks. Guys. The car came with two replacement mounts, but they look kind of old themselves. I'm contemplating buying some new ones from WRP or Dale Cooper.

I use a short piece of 2X4 and a floor jack. place the 2X4 on the pan lip. Replace BOTH mounts as Stilloutthere suggests. .
  • I just did the mounts on my 262 last week.  I jacked up the motor under the damper and also removed the two transmission mount bolts to allow for even further clearance.  Came out no problem.

Ok, I ordered new motor mounts and front shocks from WRP.  BTW, Scott, I live in Hickory and used to work in Statesville.  Once I get this 49 Super Six Coupe (262 with Twin H set up with overdrive) on the road, I may look you up.

NAPA MM2280 is an improved motor mount which will fit Stepdowns.  I have them on my Commadore.  They have rubber between metal so they can't fail.

I did a uie one time with the old 49, the tension mount came loose, motor flopped on it's side and yanked the throttle wide open.  A little hairy there until I turned the key off.

  • I'd watch the lower radiator hose carefully as you go. There isn't much room to go straight up without stressing the outlet fitting enough to create yet another, bigger project. It's soldered into the brass bottom tank and you want it to stay that way.

  • Sounds good Jason...let's connect at some point. I just raced my coupe in the inaugural Coatesville Grand Prix in PA over the weekend and I need to make a couple of repairs to the car but I should have her sorted out soon.
