I read somewhere that there were 54 different configurations in 1938

According to Don Butler's The History of Hudson, there were 56 passenger cars & 16 utility & commercial models. The model "112" superceded the Terraplane range.

This is what I remember, as well.  1938 was a banner year for options, models, body styles, which was always odd to me, as '38 was a bad recession year, financially.  56!  That's astounding.
